Page 33: Devian
Wednesday, March 21st, 2007I like Devian. Only a few vampires can fly, by the way — only those directly descended from the first flying vampire. More on that later in the comic.

March 21st, 2007 at 5:39 am
well seeing as how im canadian….
it kinda sucks that were all dead…
March 21st, 2007 at 5:46 am
Nice way to introduced a new vampire. Sucks that Canada’s completely eliminated.
March 21st, 2007 at 6:02 am
Also Canadian. And notably disappointed in us.
not in the comic though, longtime fan, loving the art, especially.
Intrigued by the writing, gonna need more time to make an informed opinion yet.

why does she ask how many are inside? i thought vampires in this story had amazing sensory capabilities regarding blood.
March 21st, 2007 at 7:34 am
Ehh.
As Christopher Titus said on his Comedy Special last night…
‘The Canadians never seriously affect the world at all!’
March 21st, 2007 at 7:45 am
is that the same pointy stick the teacher was threatening Math with that the kid’s holding? Or do all the sticks just kind of look the same;)
March 21st, 2007 at 7:49 am
Noooooooo not Canada!!!
anyhow, like the new vamp, shes cute, what ethnicity? I’d say asain but the shark (?) tooth earrings make me also think native american….
March 21st, 2007 at 7:51 am
If only the descendants of the first flying vampire can fly. . . how did the first flying vampire fly? Bit some college student cramming for finals on 3 cases of Red Bull?
March 21st, 2007 at 10:18 am
Canada’s gone?!?! That’s alright, Mac’s probably Canadian, otherwise he wouldn’t be able to take out 3 zombies in a single swipe. =D
March 21st, 2007 at 10:41 am
Like the comic and I am looking forward to seeing what you do on a larger screen. Just one question about this page: If the dog ran past the stick to check out the new vamp, why does the kid have a stick in his hand?
March 21st, 2007 at 10:53 am
No we canadians are stronger then that……… But yes that vampire looks very cool… Waiting for more.. keep it comin……… I like this very much.
March 21st, 2007 at 11:20 am
“Bit some college student cramming for finals on 3 cases of Red Bull? ”
Lmao xDD
Poor Canada. Best not tell my friend about that, heh.
Um…dare I ask…how is Northern ireland doing with the whole zombie fiasco? Haha bet we were all killed first xD
Eee Jimmy looks so frail and helpless…he’s in for a little bit of a shock I dare say.
March 21st, 2007 at 2:03 pm
“why does she ask how many are inside? i thought vampires in this story had amazing sensory capabilities regarding blood.”
Not all of them, no. Math is the best at that among them all, and the flying vampires were short changed on most of the other powers. Devian isn’t a very good figther either.
“is that the same pointy stick the teacher was threatening Math with that the kid’s holding? Or do all the sticks just kind of look the same;)”
It’s the same stick on purpose. Going to be an important prop in the movie.
“anyhow, like the new vamp, shes cute, what ethnicity?”
She’s Asian, yeah.
“If only the descendants of the first flying vampire can fly. . . how did the first flying vampire fly?”
Who knows. How did the first vampire continue to live after dying? How did the first walking human walk?
“If the dog ran past the stick to check out the new vamp, why does the kid have a stick in his hand?”
Kid throws the stick, right? Dog runs past it and out of sight. Kid follows after, looking for his dog, sees stick on ground, picks it up, continues looking for dog. Simple.
“Um…dare I ask…how is Northern ireland doing with the whole zombie fiasco?”
Europe was wiped out ages ago. Spoiler: It’s just America and Mexico now, and Mexico’s in trouble.

what about little tiny Caribbean islands? like Barbados dang it! We all live with big metal gates attached to our doors and windows, and the doors and louvres have to be hurricane proof so i think my house is zombie proof! lol
speaking of which I could almost swear I saw a zombie yesterday, but it could also have been a drugged out rasta, he was shambling past my house on the road, walking just like a zombie, and had his mouth hanging open. FREAKED me out!! he lives in the village nearby and you can normally hear him yelling at his dog or the chickens or maybe its his lime tree, whenever he gets TOASTED, its kinda funny, i guess this time he was too pooped.. i hope! dum dum DUM!
March 21st, 2007 at 3:14 pm
“what about little tiny Caribbean islands?”
What about the White House’s underground bunker? They’re all dead too. The First Zombie went after them all and told his troops exactly how to get to everyone, no matter where they were. Spoiler: The zombies are strong when they’re under his control and they can also do many different things, like find large weapons (like bombs) and use them.
And good story about the zombie rasta! You gotta get a picture.
March 21st, 2007 at 3:26 pm
Pshhh, Canada gone? Its population so low and landmass so huge, I don’t think it would be vanquished of survivors for…well, decades. Then again, 65 years or so of hiding. I guess fortifying the frozen tundra up in Alert would even wear down after that, seeing supplies dwindle and whatnot. Too bad though, if the materials could be delivered in time, it’d be hella easy to defend that place.
March 21st, 2007 at 3:41 pm
I’ll see if he does it again
Living in the islands you see lots of fun stuff, heck in Dominica we drove past a house with a human skull impaled on the front gate, Im NOT kidding!! and then there was the old lady with her eyes rolled up in her head in the supermarket, just mindlessly shuffling around, I had to build up my courage to go ask her if she was ok, but she just moaned at me, then this younger woman came and led her away…
so, you know how in the ‘normal’ vamp stories a good sharp piece of wood is handy for dispatching them? does this apply in your story and does it apply to zombies (or are zombies strictly head wound only mortalities?)
March 21st, 2007 at 3:43 pm
zombies with nukes.. oooohh man can we get a flashback of that???? that is just too good a visual XD
March 21st, 2007 at 4:35 pm
What about the International Space Station? Betcha the zombies haven’t got those guys yet.
March 21st, 2007 at 6:25 pm
Son of a.. Damn, if Canada’s gone.. well, that sucks. I’m dead. Unless for some reason I decided at some point to move to this little town, or Mexico.. which are both very unlikely. F***ing zombies. I gotta say, though, that first Zombie must be one /hell/ of a multi-tasker, hm? I mean, wiping out the whole damned world is no easy task, and the way you say he’s controlling the other zombies, it sounds like he’s doing pretty much all the work himself. I mean, I guess he had lots of time to plan it out, but still.. >.
March 21st, 2007 at 6:26 pm
>.
March 21st, 2007 at 6:27 pm
Eh, they aren’t anywhere NEAR self-sufficient. Its only been a month, sure, but also, if the zombies can use weapons… it only takes one missile to take down the ISS.
How come Europe went first, when the First Zombie came out of the Pacific Ocean, on the west coast in the USA? Granted, high population density and all that mess would let the infection/whatever spread a LOT faster than in the US, but still…
Also, the isolated survivors thing… random pacific islanders are hardly likely to become infected or be in contact with infected, if a community only 2000 miles away from TFZ’s emergence location is still holding out.
March 21st, 2007 at 6:27 pm
Bastard. It’ll be nice to see him die.. hard.
Huh, something just occured to me. I remember in an earlier post you mentioned that the ethnicity of this town is rather.. restricted. Does that mean that if, in the end, the zombies are somehow defeated, and it’s up to these poor buggers to repopulate the planet (As I assume mexico’s not gonna make it), is there just going to be white people, then? Gasp! The first zombie, that was originally a vampire, is actually in fact Hitler, who somehow survived being stabbed through the brain-case! Dastardly Vampire Zombie Hitler!
(For some reason it cut off this second half of my post. It doesn’t seem to like the shift+, key, I think.)
March 21st, 2007 at 6:49 pm
“How come Europe went first, when the First Zombie came out of the Pacific Ocean, on the west coast in the USA?”
You gotta understand that almost EVERYONE went at about the same speed. Do you see a big difference between 33 survivors and zero, or even between 33 and 10,000? When you’re starting with 300 million in America, and you’re only left with even 10,000, that means 99.997% of the population is already dead. But with 33 left, that means 99.999989% of the population is dead. So it’s all the same thing basically. It’s not like “Yay, America won, we have 33 survivors and the rest of the countries have zero!” No, everyone lost, including America.
I think I’ve said in the comments for recent pages that the First Zombie intentionally kept this town alive for a specific reason, and that he’s related to someone who we’ve already met in the story.
“Also, the isolated survivors thing… random pacific islanders are hardly likely to become infected or be in contact with infected, if a community only 2000 miles away from TFZ’s emergence location is still holding out.”
The First Zombie went after them all, and it didn’t take any planning. It was very easy. He was a vampire who could smell blood extremely well, even better than Math probably, and he retained those powers as a zombie and instructed his zombies to take out people all over, telling them exactly where to go. It wasn’t difficult. He had billions of zombies at his command. Also, the First Zombie certainly didn’t walk those 2,000 miles. He has other means of travel, and he was all over the world in that month. But no, he can’t fly like Devian.
Sleet: Yeah, I guess it would just be white people, if any of them actually survive. And vampires, though, and there’d probably be more vampires than humans, depending on how many of them die before the end. The vampires probably wouldn’t want to do much reproducing, though, because there’s so few humans to give them blood already. We haven’t seen all the survivors yet, though. Haven’t seen two or three of the kids yet at all, and we haven’t got a good look at all the adults yet. Might not be all white.
March 21st, 2007 at 7:05 pm
Well now we’ll need to meet ‘Toke Black Survivor’. And people, Bobzilla here seems to be getting a little tired of answer ‘what about this group of people’ questions. Its his story, everyone’s dead. Get over it. Heck, even Chuck Norris got killed.
March 21st, 2007 at 7:59 pm
Does that mean the human race, once repopulated, would be completely white? Noo, I thought America was a melting pot!
What kind of Asian is Devian? ^^
March 21st, 2007 at 8:02 pm
I believe she’s Chinese.
March 21st, 2007 at 8:33 pm
No more Canda?
…
I think I died a little inside right there….
March 21st, 2007 at 11:25 pm
How is the first zombie able to communicate with all the zombies? Surely they’ve spread out all over the world, and he can only be in one place at a time.
March 21st, 2007 at 11:27 pm
I think I’ve said it a few times, but it’s telepathically.
March 22nd, 2007 at 3:40 am
I wonder how many web comics out there ferment this much discussion in its first month? This comic ROX!!
just wanted to say that
March 22nd, 2007 at 6:04 am
Woohoo! Im the phychotic leader of NK! Anyways…. NOOOOOO!!! NOT CANADADIA!!!!! *sniff* no more yummy syrup? I dont think I can go on…
BLARG!
March 22nd, 2007 at 7:36 am
Hey.
Hey.
Hey.
Chuck Norris does not die.
Chuck Norris’ can roundhouse kick zombie-heads for miles, man. Miles.
Clearly, he must be a vampire still.
March 22nd, 2007 at 8:58 am
Devian’s not a Chinese name….
March 22nd, 2007 at 9:13 am
Asian chicks rule! I’d love to see chopsticks holding her hair up.
March 22nd, 2007 at 9:54 am
The talk about repopulating gave me another idea…
Can vampires and humans interbreed? I mean, since Dev is Asian, that could result in a slightly less homogenous population.
Also, 33 people is below the limit for genetic survivability, if I recall correctly. Not enough variation, so the entire population becomes vulnerable to the same things. Although I suppose with Addison Payne around, genetic errors can easily be corrected and such.
Hmm, that brings up another repopulation scenario… cloning? Also, in vitro fertilization? You’d pretty much HAVE to do something along those lines in order to repopulate the human race enough that they could survive on their own again, starting from 33 people.
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:00 am
Im sure Addison Payne can figure out how to get the population running again. He really just needs a few samples of dna if you think about it. probably wouldnt even need any LIVING humans if push comes to shove. but having living women would make it easier. and living men would help boost the genetic stock.
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:02 am
Chuck Norris is the first zombie, isn’t that obvious?
He does a good job of kicking ass..
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:00 am
D’oh! New Zealand is gone. =/ I’m toast.
And yeah… maybe we have astronauts/cosmonauts we can bring back to add to the genepool.
What about animals? Does TFZ want to get rid of them, too? Or is he just after people? Maybe he’s just an ecologically minded individual, and he wants to make more room for pandas and badgers and elephants and such.
March 22nd, 2007 at 1:46 pm
“Can vampires and humans interbreed?”
I’ll keep that a secret for now!
“What about animals?”
Nah, TFZ doesn’t care about them.
And yeah, Addison Payne can do anything — if he survives. Also, there’s going to be a lot less than 33 humans alive by the end of this graphic novel! You already know about Jimmy, and I’ve said Mustache Man’s gonna bite the dust.
March 22nd, 2007 at 4:24 pm
Oh my. The almighty Mustache Man, how we’ll miss you.
I’m pretty sure he’ll be mighty dissapointed when he learns his death could have been prevented. Ah well, tis survival of the fittest and the fittest alone.
I think my friend’s become a zombie. She got an ipod recently and now she constantly stares off into space…
March 22nd, 2007 at 5:01 pm
“Devian’s not a Chinese name….”
I’m Chinese, but I was also given an English name. :p
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:34 pm
I want clarification from Mr. Plot, Bobby Crosby himself. . .
Does Chuck Norris die? For so goeth Mr. Norris so goeth the fate of humanity. Personally. I say he’s toast. When have you seen him fight the undead?
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:22 pm
Devian could be a really bad romanization/anglicization… I mean, if xiang gang (pronounced sorta like see-ahng gahng) gets turned into Hong Kong…
March 23rd, 2007 at 6:57 am
Actually, Hong Kong sounds like Hong Kong in Cantonese, which is spoken widely in Hong Kong. =P
And Dev is cool, no matter the name.
March 24th, 2007 at 12:52 am
Chuck norris is not dead. Chuck Norris is a vampire.
March 24th, 2007 at 2:43 pm
I’m pretty sure Harrison Ford is a vampire, too.
I mean, really. Indiana Jones.
April 28th, 2007 at 4:22 am
I’ve got to say, having less than 33 humans alive at the end canNOT bode well for the continuation of the human race…
May 18th, 2007 at 8:30 pm
OMG! I just totally figured out who TFZ is related to! I bet you he’s like the great-great-great-great grandfather of April or something! and he knows this because of his super-nose!
(btw, this is my first post, but I’d like to say that this comic is genius. )
May 19th, 2007 at 2:45 pm
Thanks, Katticus.
“and he knows this because of his super-nose!”
Her last name helps too. Also, he’s not that old!
June 7th, 2007 at 2:48 pm
Accidentally deleted a comment from Cora that said, “Speaking for all the now dead Canadians…
Dammit!”
June 30th, 2007 at 7:01 pm
All I’m going to say is NOT CANADA!!!
July 19th, 2007 at 8:28 am
aww man, no maple syrup!
RJ
October 2nd, 2007 at 7:50 pm
No Canada? probably the first choice I didnt like about this Comic. keep up the good work. there is always a chance for redemption.
October 19th, 2007 at 3:01 am
Bit of a late-comer I am, but I can’t resist the urge to chime in my two cents. In Anne Bishop’s Black Jewel’s trilogy, the Eyrien (a flying race of humanoids) women’s names end in ‘-ian’. The coincidence made me giggle.
October 26th, 2007 at 5:40 am
She’s beautiful! I LOVE HER
November 14th, 2007 at 6:16 pm
Awwww!!! I would keep Canada alive, just you see. Bring back the Canadians!!!
November 17th, 2007 at 10:54 am
Canadia? What is a Canadia? Isn’t that some third-world country or somesuch?

January 11th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
OH no, I’m dead D:
Actually, considering that Canada is the most badass country in wars, I’m surprised ._o
March 15th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
poor canada
April 5th, 2008 at 5:27 am
theres bound to be at least some other humans alive, like iniut in northpole, (or southpole i dont know) or some african forest people or something, but if only this group in America survived, say bye-bye to the world’s cultures
July 6th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
I personally find it unlikely that Canada would be wiped out before the states… Canada is much less densely populated, ten times less. This would mean in the States more people would become zombies in a small area, and would have less distance to travel to infect more. Also it originated in the states apparently?
Besides, like Math said, its about unity, and Canadians are much friendlier than Americans.
May 30th, 2009 at 10:06 am
I’m pretty sure that first zombie did it on purpose but why would he do that :s
May 30th, 2009 at 10:10 am
i have an idea!!! when the zombies come we all go to a cold place and hold out there. only problem will be food i think. but this vault thing somewhere in Norway i think (i have absolutely no idea where it is), they have seeds of all kind of plants, even DNA of animals i think. If you go there, and you can survive zombiew will be much less of a problem. The cold will make them even slower or even unable to move, their blood is cold so it will freeze, they will become icepuppets and all liquids in their body will freeze, so the brain might even get destroyed, neat plan right?
July 17th, 2009 at 9:32 am
Maybe all the Canadians are hiding in Nunavut?
I’d probably be the first to die in a zombie apocalypse haha Having to stay in a small area with a large number of people? Panic and run away I shall!
August 14th, 2009 at 6:27 pm
I also find it unlikely Canada would be wiped out before the States… we generally have low density populations, and, depending on what zombie lore you read into, our winters would slow them, if not freeze them completely.
I bet Madagascar is just fine. 20 points if you get that reference.
Also, great comic so far. I saw ads for it on a comic site I frequent. The ads were ages ago but forums on imdb for a vampire movie called Day Breaker reminded me to look this comic up again.
