Poor Mustache Man.

103 Responses to “Page 64: Amputation”

  1. Uncle Bob Says:

    It won’t work

  2. Uncle Bob Says:

We’ll, It may remove his arm effectively, but he’s still a zombie-to-be.

  3. Odin Says:

Muhahahaha!!! I got the first comment! Awesome artwork Owen, as always. Math looks a little sadistic in the third panel. Almost like he REEEEEALY enjoys the idea of them cutting up MM for nothing. Looks like Jimmy is going to be avenged after all. By the way how is Owen doing? Last I heard he felt like a can of smashed assholes.

  4. Odin Says:

Had to run after child. Missed first comment window by a few min.

  5. Feeney Says:

Ahh, I get it. They can’t stitch the wound up in time, so he dies anyways. But this way, they’ll think it was an accident instead of Math being, well, Math.

  6. Guen Says:

Hmm. Math, I can understand you wanting revenge, but is this really wise? Allowing them to cut off Mustache’s arm will only spill more tainted blood, possibly exposing the others to infection.

That raises a question: with all these zombies being killed and their blood flying everywhere, could someone become infected after blood contact with a dead zombie? (I know all zombies are dead, I don’t know how to word it - you know what I mean.)

  7. Bobby Crosby Says:

Only way to become a zombie is to be bit by a zombie, so no worries there. And Mustache’s blood isn’t even changed yet, isn’t a zombie yet (not for 24 hours), but even if a human drank some zombie blood, they still wouldn’t turn into a zombie. Gotta be bitten.

  8. Amy Says:

This idea was really really dumb. A few beats of the heart would make it spread far enough to make it necessary to kill him. Besides if they don’t get it cauterized really fast he’s going to die from blood loss anyway because they just cut through a major artery. I guess they could always try gunpowder or something…

  9. wedge Says:

I love that, “that’s a good idea, why don’t you try that?” I’d have said that just to prove a point. its one of those sun tzu kinda things, make an example

  10. Goatboy Khan Says:

Why don’t we suspend our disbelief, not worry about all this scientific bickering as to how it would spread, and accept the story for what it is, hmm? Scientifically accurate or no, MM deserves this. And, in the world of fiction, reality bends to the whim of the author, am I wrong?
    -Goat

  11. Bobby Crosby Says:

Goatboy, I think Amy was saying it was a dumb idea by Grady, not a dumb idea by me.

  12. Chris Says:

Yeah, I’m pretty sure that Math already knows it’s not gonna work, and is just going to let them “try to save him” rather than be the one to kill the moustache man himself.

    Which is pretty twisted.

  13. The HellJack Says:

    Damn. I mean…really.

“Why don’t you try that”…good smirk on Math there.

  14. Kaptain Kwanzaa Says:

Goatboy, if we use that logic, doesn’t that mean anything in this story can be justified, which just creates an easy shield for criticism?

  15. Bumtown Says:

Hmmm. Somehow I think Math doesn’t have MM’s best interests at heart.

  16. nebelkrähe Says:

Pretty obvious he’s letting them mutilate Mustache for the fun of it - I mean, look at his smile! This is the moment in the cinema when half of the crowd goes “yesssss!” … and the other half wonders how gross their boyfriends sometimes are. *g*

  17. Penguin Says:

Is there really any drawback to being a vampire? Well, aside from starvation making you a zombie.

  18. Vasiliki Says:

Guess Math knows that it won’t do any good…
But still, I don’t know if it meant to show that zombie-sickness can’t be stopped or if it is a means of revenge, wanting mustache man suffer (and giving him false hopes) before eventually dying

  19. Raikoh_Minamoto Says:

    HAHA! He had it comin.’

  20. -JB- Says:

“Goatboy, I think Amy was saying it was a dumb idea by Grady, not a dumb idea by me.”

I’d say that it makes perfect sense, because even if it is successful (aka, MM doesn’t bleed to death), then it’ll show that you can’t go anywhere a zombie’s teeth or saliva. If he does die, then Math doesn’t have to kill him and look like the “bad guy”.

How many guys are holding him down, Bobby? It’s freakin HARD to hold someone down when they’re terrified… and even harder when they’re in pain. One of my friends got bitten by a ferret and we couldn’t get it off him…. the key with getting a ferret to let go is to stop pulling (it was hanging off his arm). It took four of us to pin him and that was when we had a whole arm for someone to sit on while we disengaged the ferret’s jaws.. When you’ve only got a stump left…. how do you hold that stump still enough to tie of arteries, veins, and then bandage teh wound propperly?

  21. Abaddon the Despoiler Says:

One of the best pages imo. This is Math I like, and this is the action I like.

  22. Lydia Says:

Awesome. Wasn’t expecting this, since we keep hearing about the guy’s death (though he could still die).

  23. Owen Says:

I want MM to live! He’s suffered enough for his sins! Who wants to join my grass roots movement!

P.S. I’m feeling much better, but I’m out of town til Monday. 3 pages next week though if I get scripts on time. We should be good for it, Bobby and I are both commited to it. Thanks everyone, and thanks as well for your patience.

  24. dc Says:

You know, I’m thinking Math’s not really thinking clearly. Wouldn’t Math need Moustache man’s blood, and doesn’t using the axe just waste tons of it?

  25. Bobby Crosby Says:

dc: Mustache’s blood was spoiled when he got bit. No good to vampires anymore. He’s not fully a zombie yet, but his blood is starting to change and it’s of no use to them right after they get bit.

  26. Medea Says:

I’m completely sure Math knows it’s not going to work. But… somehow this page still made me like him more and not less.

  27. Medea Says:

Even thought I didn’t hate Moustache Man… that much. More like I was mildly disgusted by him.

  28. DSF Says:

Bearded man with amputation idea: way to keep thinking under pressure. Also, extra points for having the balls to actually take responsibility for your idea. You are a true friend. Also, nice job to the vampire who, even after centuries, is still open to new ideas. I hope it does work. Ax wouldn’t be my first choice for how to have a limb removed, personally. But hey, it’s quick.

  29. Bobby Crosby Says:

    “Bearded man . . .”

Sad that you don’t remember Grady’s name. He’s the best.  Although we really didn’t get a good look at him head on in this page, so it’s understandable.

  30. Teri B. Says:

Am I the only one who doesn’t hate MM or want to see him in pain? He was never evil or anything, just scared and petty and human and vulnerable.

  31. Bobby Crosby Says:

I hate humans, especially petty ones.

  32. crazyeddie Says:

Oh man they didnt even try to chop at a joint. That’s gunna take a few chops… yuk. Poor MM, that’s gotta suck.

  33. Nara Says:

methinks Math is being eeeeeeeeevillll here, heh and we like it :D his expression in the third panel is so “stupid humans!”

  34. Teri B. Says:

But all humans are petty. :-)

  35. Avarie Says:

Wow, been reading for a bit, and this page is great. I love the way Math looks when he’s like, yeah go ahead and try it. XD He looks Teh 3vil. Xd

  36. Katticus Says:

is it just the highlighting, or did Math get a streak of gray in his hair?
His eyes almost look like they have no pupils.
    Heh, he looks so cool…

  37. Klu Says:

who knew Math can be an ass and a badass at the same time..

  38. NickGXZ Says:

    This made me laugh.

And it made me feel horrid for laughing. Ah well.

  39. El Says:

I feel kinda sorry for the old guy…but then I would.

  40. Corky Says:

Just like the amputations of yesteryear!

  41. Mochi Says:

    yaaaay!!!! GANGRENE!!!!!

  42. Conor Says:

Heart pumps blood from the extremities in only a matter of seconds… if he’s already feeling sick, he’s screwed.

Me and my dark sense of humor laughed at this page.

  43. Daniel P. Rahl Says:

    Booyeah, I called that one!

  44. Lil' Hana Says:

Wooo, Grady’s darkened body in the 5th panel is so ominous! Fantastic!

  45. Hyshinara Says:

    bwahaha, suffer mustache man :P

like some provious posts: won’t work
i think Math wants him to suffer because he indirectly killed Jimmy and his mom

  46. Alex Says:

Why do i have a feeling grady wanted to do that for the fun of it and not to help mm out he seemed so happy “I’ll go get my axe” he is getting revenge on mm for when he left him and murdo out to fight the zombies by them selfs.

  47. Melby Says:

I actually feel kind of bad for mustache man… even though he’s a grade-A jackass the way he does things, if you look underneath his persona, he’s really only trying to help. The way I see it, he’s only been doing what he thinks he has to.

Unfortunately, he’s a coward, and that just got him and Jimmy killed. Sucks to be him.

  48. BlackSight6 Says:

First time posting. I didn’t particularly like MM, but not enough to want him to die. Of course, had he died I wouldn’t have cared. But he didn’t do anything that made me hate him enough to want to just simply cause him pain, and now that hes being put through torture, I’m starting to feel sorry for him.

Math’s look is a little evil, and while it may seem cruel, I think it’s actually a good idea. Just right out killing MM would be the right thing to do, but he’d lose face with the survivors. Even though it would have been futile to try and save MM, they wouldn’t believe that and they would hate Math for not even trying. This way, he proves the point that you can’t do anything to help once you’ve been bit.

  49. Abaddon the Despoiler Says:

I remember Math from the page titled “Yes”. Go back to it, all of you, and then look at Math in this page.

  50. eFFeeMMe Says:

    “I hate that mustache man”
    “I hate that mustache man”
    “Poor mustache man”
Somehow the author’s comments aren’t very bright whenever MM pops up =P It’s probably MM’s fault anyway.

  51. achrin Says:

if you had Axed mm he would most likely have preferred a bullet to the head
as it is they can continue whittling away at him and asking … do you STILL feel sick now..CHOP… are you feeling better yet…CHOP ….how about now …
and so on and so forth

  52. Jade Says:

“Is there really any drawback to being a vampire? Well, aside from starvation making you a zombie.”

And the fact that you need to feed on humans to survive? I mean… It was surely never going to be -easy- to feed on humans, survive, and stay undercover. Now, there’s barely enough humans to feed off; the entire race is on the brink of extinction. As they need them to survive I’d say that’s a definate drawback- Val’s already convinced she’s going to die, and wants to be killed before she starts to starve.

Hanyway, moving onto the comic; I have to say just one thing.
    “HA!”
It amuses me endlessly. A closed-minded coward who cares only for his own life is finally meeting a slow and painful demise. I can’t say I find any sympathy for it; only amusement.
And I don’t think Grady’s suggestion was dumb at all. I mean, I doubt he knows the biological side of the corruption; so maybe a little corrupted blood running through MM would be okay, if the “source” of the corruption is removed- aka, amputation. Additionally, Math’s wording before Grady suggests amputation could easily lead to his idea; or if he had already had the idea, lead to it being confirmed in his own mind as a valid one. We all know it won’t work; as does Math. However, I think it’s safe to say none of the humans know this.

I find it utterly HILARIOUS that MM would still rather slowly turn into a zombie in the next few hours, than go through the pain of amputation now. Ha. Me personally, I’d do the job myself. I mean, the shooting job; not the amputation job.

Anyway, my thoughts there. Lovin’ Math; although sooner or later he’ll have to come clean to April if they’re going to truly get close. And she ain’t gunna be happy.
Oh yeah, and do we have a first name for MM yet? I think it should be Dave. We all know a Dave we hate, I’m sure.

  53. Rawr Says:

    YYYYYYYYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!

  54. Brendan Says:

Math letting them chop off the arm will show that theres no way to stop a zombification thus forcing them to be ruthless with eliminating the infected in the future. Plus as has been said Math gets non of the bad press for being the one to kill him.

  55. Penguin Says:

Jade: “And the fact that you need to feed on humans to survive? I mean… It was surely never going to be -easy- to feed on humans, survive, and stay undercover. Now, there’s barely enough humans to feed off; the entire race is on the brink of extinction. As they need them to survive I’d say that’s a definate drawback- Val’s already convinced she’s going to die, and wants to be killed before she starts to starve.”

I meant in general, not specific to the events going on in the comic right now. I mean, they don’t seem like vampires so much as immortal people who happen to drink blood. Sunlight doesn’t bother them, they can survive a plane crash easily, apparently only being vulnerable to stakes, and they seem to enjoy all the perks of being alive right down to being able to have children and the like, and on top of that they’re very powerful, like being able to fly or track people from hundreds of miles away by scent. All you have to do is drink a little blood once in awhile. They seem less like vampires per se and more like X-Men.

And if you don’t drink blood… you don’t die, you go through an extremely painful transformation to a zombie, sure, but in time the pain goes away and you you get your sentience and vampiric powers back. Then any zombie you create will be your slave, and you can telepathically control a limitless zombie army.

For that kind of deal, having to drink human blood is like… well, who cares?

  56. Flux Says:

One of the things I noticed was that no one except the Mustache Man was opposed to brutally hacking off one of his limbs. No one came to his defense, there are a few people holding him down, and it seems they didn’t give him any medicine from the school’s nurse’s office to dull the pain (though it is doubtful some Advil are going to make a medival amputation easy). It is as if they want him to die a brutal and agonizing death.

  57. aquamage Says:

you have a point but if you were paying attention the zombie vampire you become has no control over them selves and they rot so no you are not exactly the same thing. But you do have more powers. Also this is a story that does not follow normal vampire and zombie rules becasue if it did the vampires would have alot more weaknesses and the zombies would not be controlled.

  58. aquamage Says:

I dont think they want him to die, I think that they did the right thing in cutting it off as fast as possible before it could spread. i think the reason why the vamp is being so un opposed to this is because he knows he will turn into a zombie any ways and wants to see him suffer a bit for being a coward. I also like the fact that someone had their axe handy just in case they needed to kill him =)

  59. Paul Cowan Says:

I’m joining the movement, save Mustache Man! If ironic punishments were visited on all those who were sometimes dicks we’d all be dead. :)

  60. dee Says:

I know Bobby has clearly explain how people become zombies, but I thought it would be really funny if Bearded Man’s axe had zombie blood on it when he hacked into Mustache Man…

    hee.

  61. Kyle Says:

What a perfect situation for Math, not only does he look good in the eyes of the survivors, but he gets to show his true colors without anyone else noticing. His eyes changed and it really makes him look quite sinister. Makes me wonder just how much evil Math is hiding from everyone.

  62. Orthag Says:

i like the um you know thats a good idea part. thats just funny

  63. Nara Says:

Hey Jade how about Dan? Dont know any nice Dans

  64. Payahm Says:

Wow, I do not understand why everyone hates the Moustache guy. I mean, so far the worst thing he’s done has been afraid. NO ONE wouldn’t be afraid if the dead were coming back to life and eating everybody!

  65. Hammer_of_Dawn Says:

    MAUHAHAHAHAHAHAH, take the Mustache Man!
Now that is what I call karma!

  66. Necavi Omnes Says:

I just orgasmed from how brilliantly hilarious and just this page is.

    -Neca

  67. Iethloc Says:

Even if amputation of the offending limb would work, they cut off the wrong arm. In the flashback, he was shown hitting the zombie with his left arm. But they’re cutting off his right arm.

And Math’s expression in the third panel was absolutely perfect!

  68. mark Says:

Gee, I wonder if Math’s gonna have him self a nice little drink soon….

  69. Carrin Says:

Just watched a couple zombie movies,, and they tried that in all of them XD

Didn’t work, but then again, they WERE bad zombie movies.

  70. dee Says:

Doubt Math would drink MM’s tainted blood…

  71. Laura Dove Says:

Newcommer reader here, and I have to say I like this comic a lot. Too bad I probably can’t buy the paper version here. :-(

I wonder if Math is just being saddistic with Mustache Man as a revenge for being forced to smile and be kind with these humans he despises, or if he sees it as a revenge for Jimmy’s death. Because in the second case, he forgets a bit too fast that Val and him were the ones _supposed_ to protect the humans. And what were they doing during the attack? He was sleeping, and she was having sex!! They are as guilty as Mustache Man!

  72. Jade Says:

“Hey Jade how about Dan? Dont know any nice Dans.”

I don’t know, I think Dan is a good name; I’ve known only a couple of Dans, and they were okay. I’ve known a -lot- of Daves and most of them were, ah… Not okay. Not all, just most. ^_~

Anyway, Bobby may already have a first name in mind; that was just a thought that amused me so I posted it.

  73. bob Says:

    that looked painful.

  74. Mr. Fuzz Says:

My comic book store burned down last month, so I’ve been forced to the webcomic. Still love it anyways.

  75. Mr. Fuzz Says:

If we could get a real doctor to get in on this and the effects of venom, I’m sure we could get a good idea of what’s going to happen to Mr. Mustache.

  76. Duder Says:

Just a question, but did you(and/or Grady) get the idea of chopping his arm off to stop the infrection from the movie Day of the Dead?

Cause in that movie, the guy who had his arm cut off went crazy and let all the zombies in.

Love your work Bobby and Owen.

  77. Penguin Says:

Mr. Fuzz: “If we could get a real doctor to get in on this and the effects of venom, I’m sure we could get a good idea of what’s going to happen to Mr. Mustache.”

Don’t think you need a doctor to confirm this one. You amputate to contain infections and stop rot from spreading. If Mustache Man is already feeling sick (which is an insane rate of incubation/infection btw, but we’ll just accept that at face value for now rather than assume it’s psychosomatic) then the pathogens or whatever has already spread beyond the arm and it’s too late.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amputation

Also, axes generally take a couple swings to cut through limbs and necks. Things just keep on getting worse for Mustache Man, don’t they?

  78. Bobby Crosby Says:

“Just a question, but did you(and/or Grady) get the idea of chopping his arm off to stop the infrection from the movie Day of the Dead?”

Had no clue they did that in that movie, although I have seen both versions at some point, but I hate them — horrible, forgettable movies. Anyway, this guy can’t “go crazy and let all the zombies in,” so that’s good.

  79. DarkKnight412 Says:

I still think Mustache Man’s first name should be Eugene…anyway, are they going to light him on fire next to cauterize the wound? That would make Math smile…

  80. Raikoh Says:

Bobby, I have a question about the comic: when a Vamp/Zombie bites a person, does it have to break the skin/draw blood to infect them? (because I’ve had cuts where blood didn’t come for a good few minutes).

  81. Bobby Crosby Says:

    Yes, must break the skin.

  82. keroppi Says:

    0_o Mob mentality = scary.

Although.. it WOULD be funny if they did take the wrong arm.
Grady:”Oops, my bad…. K, lets do the other one now”

  83. DarkKnight412 Says:

Oooh..then we could call him “Nubby”…

  84. Will Says:

Great page, its so good on so many levels. I’ve gotta say though, if I had to die because I bit on a finger, I’d be f-ing PISSED

  85. Will Says:

^sorry for the double post, I can’t edit my original apparently… to clean up any cause for confussion; “I *got* bit on a figner”

  86. vo Says:

“I just orgasmed from how brilliantly hilarious and just this page is.

    -Neca ”

Neca, I think I love you. If you were single and I didn’t have such an absurd hatred of of humanity, I would want to have your babies.

They should’ve given Math the axe. Vampire strength prolly could have gotten the bone first time through. Curiousity, The cut looks to be just below the shoulder. Doesn’t give much opportunity for further amputations on the same arm. =( Wonder what they will cut off next? Maybe they will start scooping out the visibly infected tissue with a rusty spork? God(Bobby), I hope so.

  87. Bobby Crosby Says:

Someone buy this for a lot of money.

  88. Necavi Omnes Says:

Awh, shucks Vo. *smiles* That’s one of the sweetest things I’ve heard from a complete stranger… Oh, snap. I shouldn’t have told people about First Zombie (oh, by the way, he hates that name– call him Jareth. He’s a HUGE David Bowie fan) and me.

    -Neca

  89. Necavi Omnes Says:

Oh, and Bobby, you should have at least 10 more orders for Last Blood by the end of this week. Last night I went on a rant about this page, and my friends decided to check it out. Now they’re raving to others. And soon, the others shall tell even more others.
And pretty soon, we’ll have a small pyramid of ever-growing ‘others’.

    -Neca

  90. PZenteno Says:

i think mac and devian will meet addison payne, i think val will die or wont resist and will kill a few humans, and also addison won’t find the cure, just my prediction

  91. Lore Naraigh Says:

There are alot of sceptics out there, perhaps Math has never actually attempted to amputate someone who’s been bitten before, and actually hope’s it might work. no harm in trying is there? (except that they cut off the wrong arm :D)

Go on, do a little sideline comic where they realise that and cut off his other arm, I’d love to see a ‘nubby’ zombie, it’d be funny as hell.

  92. Sean Says:

So what happened to “3 pages this week?” C’mon, the wait is KILLING us! (guys, if we get impatient, its your own damn fault for giving us such a good story).

  93. Bobby Crosby Says:

Totally my fault recently for not getting Owen the scripts soon enough. Didn’t get him Page 65 until Tuesday night. That should be up Thursday night some time, then Page 66 hopefully on Friday or Saturday, THEN next week we should start consistently doing three pages per week again.

  94. Sean Says:

Great! Bobby, contact me offline to see if I can help push your books to Chicago comic shops.

  95. Vo Says:

“oh, by the way, he hates that name– call him Jareth. He’s a HUGE David Bowie fan”

    You’re killing me, Neca.

  96. Wizard Says:

Who cares if he goes zombie or not, it’s funny as hell that he got his arm chopped off. By guys that probably also thought you can suck snake poison out of a persons butt hehe. The vamp guy obviously caught that and was into it instantly, I’d do the same thing. Um Yeah sure, try that lol.

  97. Cat Says:

Okay, this page confuses me. How can MM have 24 hours if Jimmy was turned in only a few minutes…? *rubs temples*
Was it because it was closer to his heart or what…?

  98. Bobby Crosby Says:

Cat, your question has been answered about a trillion times already. They turn the moment they DIE. Jimmy’s injuries KILLED HIM quickly, getting his throat torn out, while Mustache Man only had a scrape on his finger. Any bite whatsoever will make you become a zombie (die) within 24 hours, but if you die before that from the severity of the injury, you become a zombie instantly after you die.

  99. flash Says:

How come nobody has asked the most obvious question? How is it that Jimmy turned into a Zombie immediately and MM has not? Thats something you might wanna sort out before you commit it to film.

  100. flash Says:

Damn i just realised someone beat me to it. My bad.

  101. Tegu Says:

THIS IS THE BEST PAGE SO FAR!

  102. Trilbydude Says:

Oh, I amlost feel sorry for him. how sad…

  103. thatguy Says:

I know this comment is old as hell, I recently discovered this gem of a comic from WOWIO so I was reading through it here.

Does nobody get that the reason Math wants the arm cut off is because of all the blood? It’s less of a personal issue and more of a blood sucking vampire issue.
